Along the Appian Way outside Rome stands a small church called Domine Quo Vadis—"Lord, where are You going?" According to an ancient Christian tradition, this is where St. Peter encountered the risen Christ while fleeing Nero's persecution and was compelled to turn back toward Rome.

The story is not found in Scripture, so why has the Church preserved it for nearly two thousand years?
